Managing Performance Improvement

Michael D. Tovey

Why is it that performance management systems are not generating the best possible productivity in the modern workforce?

This latest publication from best-selling author Michael D. Tovey looks at why performance systems can fail and explores the tools and techniques needed to overcome this failure.

Managing Performance Improvement provides practical, specific advice for readers and managers on how to plan and manage performance. Topics covered range from setting goals for the organisation, establishing key performance indicators and operational plans to setting standards of performance and ways of monitoring, analysing, appraising, and/or improving performance. The book also covers ways of dealing with unsatisfactory performance.

The following learning tools have been included to make implementation easier and enhance understanding of the theory of performance management:

  • Learning outcomes – to introduce you to the content and detail to be covered in each chapter.

  • Check your understanding – questions placed throughout each chapter to encourage you to develop skills built on the preceding content.

  • Skills practice – provide additional tasks to reinforce skill development.

  • Skill and knowledge application – mini case studies placed throughout each chapter provide a range of real life situations accompanied by questions for skills practice.

  • Case studies – at the end of each chapter provide for an integration of the knowledge and skills in the chapter.

  • Job aids – pages at the end of each chapter designed to be reproduced and used by students and managers in the workplace.

  • Checklists – provide a practical basis for readers to check the range of issues to be considered in a given situation.

Managing Performance Improvement uses recent applied research in order to provide specific suggestions that actually work, as well as ensuring currency in the practical content. While chapters are written in a logical and linear way, each chapter is also self-contained and so can be read on an as-needed basis.

This book can be used to support courses in which managing performance forms part of a Management, Team Leadership or Human Resources qualification. It further supports the implementation of the Frontline Management Initiative units of competency.
